Registered Kennel History of The Whippet The Whippet originated in England as a sporting dog among the coal miners. Its speed and agility were meant for short distance racing and for coursing rabbits. We know from works of art that they have been around at least since the 1700s. Whippets were also desirable as house pets because of their small size and agreeable natures. The Whippet was a relatively common dog of working class people. The Whippet is a sighthounds able to spot prey at a distance. It has speed combined with agility to turn and twist. It has a strong jaw to enable it to snatch its prey at speed, hold and kill it. Today it is a popular, easy to care for companion animal, but it has retained its instinct to hunt by sight and loves to participate in the sports of lure coursing, racing and agility.
